Build Requirements
Here we are again hey? It seems like only yesterday (or maybe the day before) I was hashing out the plan for my second Dyna.
With the third on its way I thought I should start with a list of things I want from/for the new bike. Its boring for you but for me it helps me go back and see how far off course I went.
The key difference between this fatty and my previous 2 Dynas is the paint. Its matte black or "Denim" as the coco puts it. I have always wanted a matte paint job. This Gen1 also has quite a bit more chrome than my Gen2. Coincidentally that is how I will differentiate between the two fattys. "Gen-1" and "Gen-2"
I have a vision for this bike that lines up with my riding ethos. Its got to be a runner, I need to be able to commute one day then do a thousand km trip the next. While the Gen-2 will remain the primary mile muncher I see the Gen-1 sharing the commuter duties in summer. In winter and for weather the Gen-2 will be the go to bike because its already weathered and will remain as is with its stage 1 upgrade.
The Gen-1 will be much much more performance oriented. More motor either with an increase in capacity (EG S&S 106, Fuelmoto 107, R&R 117") or the addition of upgraded components (Cams, Cam plate, oil pump, heads, lifters, tappets). Or a combination of both. I also want much better braking than I currently have with the Gen-2 because I'm adding more power. Suspension also to be up to the task. One of the reasons I chose another fatty is parts interchangeability. My Gen-2 will need brake rotors at some point so logically the stock Gen-1 rotors will go straight on the Gen-2.
I also want to powder coat the wheels on both bikes (Ge-2 will be all black, not sure on the Gen-1 yet) and having the same models means I could potentially pull the wheels off one while riding the other, interchange them, etc etc. I'm also trying to work out if I can run ABS bearings in both sets of wheels so that everything is swappable. I will more than likely keep running Avons so as an example if I need tyres on the Gen-2 in the middle of winter I could just swap the Gen-1s over.
I've struggled the most with what bars to run. Do I stick with tried and proven apes or do I go with more performance focused risers and tracker style bars? The Gen-1 has wide glide bars fitted and once its passed roadworthy and I start my first set of mods I will add riser extensions putting the bars closer to where a performance setup would be. That will help me make my mind up. I have apes and Risers/Bars already picked out.

The Gen-1 has a two up seat and removable sissy bar however it will be a solo only bike. I'll see how the seat goes for comfort and use the sissy bar on the Gen-2 for strapping stuff to. If the seat is rubbish (as I suspect it might be given its a stock Harley seat) It'll go on eBay and i'll get something else. I'll also be moving my swingers bag across to the Gen-1.
Other things I'm researching include:
- Lighting
- Oil Cooler
- Exhaust
- Engine black out (Rocker boxes)
- Grips
- Tuner
- Mirrors
I'm excited
