Planning bike setup in phases - Only digging one hole.

Most people buy a Harley, then slowly change it over time piece by piece. I'm doing things ass about. I'm getting as many parts as I can in advance so when I do pull the trigger on another Dyna I have most of the bits and pieces ready to go on.

PHASE 1 - Bars and Hand Controls

The first part I purchased was some bars. This was not by accident, the bars represent a substantial piece of work to fit them. It makes sense that any other components that involve the bars be upgraded at the same time for example. There are some extra considerations like the fact that the standard Brake, Clutch and Throttle cables need replacing with 2" extended versions. I also know that while swapping bars new grips will be fitted and its the best time to relocate the turn signals to forks (while the wiring is apart). I'll also swap out the risers and need to route the Legend suspension switch cable through the bars

It might not sound like much but the fact is removing the bars and pulling the wiring is pretty significant, it's also something you really only want to do once. That's why I'm a firm believer in 'only digging one hole'. I need to purchase the following before I can do a bar swap:
  1. Bars
  2. Risers
  3. Extended brake line
  4. Extended clutch cable
  5. Extended throttle cables (2)
  6. Turn Signals
  7. Grips
  8. Legend Suspensions Aero-A shocks*
*Purchaing the Legends at this stage is a bit of a question mark. The bars I've got expand to 1.25" after the control mount area. I'm not sure if this will allow installation of the handle bar switch or not so I'm trying to find this out.

PHASE 2 - Seating & Pegs

The next area of planning is comfort, specifically the seat and foot controls. Luckily the two are mutually exclusive so I can order either at any time. But for the sake of planning i'm grouping them.
  1. Mustang Wide Tripper Solo
  2. HD forward controls
  3. Pegs
  4. Brake pedal
  5. Shifter peg

PHASE 3 - Engine, Exhaust & Tune

This is a pretty important part but the reason why its not first is because I haven't decided on buying new or used yet. And around half of the used bikes I see have a pipe and air filter fitted. I still intend to run a Heavy breather and pipe of my choosing so I could potentially purchase these down the track if the bike comes with a pipe and a/c.

  1. Pipe
  2. Air cleaner
  3. Fuel Management
  4. Dyno Tune

PHASE 4 - Rolling stock

I eventually will be running a 21/18 wheel combo. However this is not something i'll do from the get go. I'm leaning towards relaxing street bob hubs to new powder coated rims which will mean this process involves a bit of downtime. I can still order all the parts in though

  1. 21 Jireh Rim
  2. 18 Rear rim
  3. Spokes
  4. Nipple
  5. Powder coating
  6. 21/18 Tyres

A plan is the best way to start, there are a few key components that I haven't made my mind up on yet like which exhaust, risers and pegs I'll go with but thats it. Full steam ahead.

I'm excited
