Lapping the high country Part 1
The plan was simple enough; I'd never seen Jindabyne or the snowy hydro scheme or anything else surrounding it so I mentioned to Jimmy that we should smash it for the labour day long weekend.
And the route was agreed.
I was out the door by 7:15am with a fuel stop en route to our meeting place in Healesville.
We smashed pies for breaky and headed over the black spur which as expected was quite busy with long weekend traffic.
We paused for a quick pic at the lookout over the Goulburn Valley.
After a fuel stop in Mansfield we hit the first of the trips amazing roads, the Mansfield-Whitfield road. I led and with the exception of an eager Wallaby made it to Whitfield around 15 minutes ahead of my co-riders.
Onwards to an old favourite camping spot and Pioneer Bridges.
While feeling up at Khancoban we were informed that there had been a fatality on the alpine way and traffic was closed for around 5 hours while the coroner attended. For a while there it looked like we may have to turn back but an updated from the highway patrol advised us that bikes were being let through so we pushed on.
The snowy Hydro scheme. I lobe shit like this and will be going back again on my own just so I can check this out some more. Hmmm maybe hydro and back in a day...
The alpine way was myriad of corners, roads were tight, traffic was few and far between.
As we approached the roadblock It became evident that the fatality was unfortunately a motorcyclist.
Up around Kosciuszko was magnificent.
The road between Thredbo and Jindabyne was by far the best and we did it in the failing light.
We arrived at lake Jindabyne just on sundown for a few snaps.
The final push to cooma was really picturesque. The heat of the day had left and the roads were wide open and free of traffic. At one point my speedo may have said 150 but I cannot be sure.
Until next time for day 2
